PASS ME THE MAP
In Latin America, Monique and Spencer also had the opportunity to screen their documentary "Pass me the Map" and re-unite with some of the organizations and people they had interviewed in 2004. Here is a small update of that:

Spencer and I spent the past two weeks in Guatemala and Mexico and got the opportunity to meet up with some of the organizations and people we had interviewed in 2004.

We met with Miguel Pickard at CIEPAC who told us their work is going forward very well, and the five projected dams along the Usumacinta River have NOT been built as the voices of the people (who live by the river) are being heard and taken into consideration. The Plan Puebla Panama' continues to be developed, however it's name has been mysteriously changed to the Proyecto Mesoamerica.

We then traveled to Oaxaca and met with CIPO-RFM, who continues to suffer incredible injustices, marginalization and violence from the state government. After being unjustly jailed for six months, Dolores had her teaching license taken away, and in two weeks time, her case is up for sentencing. Five years have passed, yet she might be sent to jail...innocent...again! We spent the afternoon with her colleague discussing the recent issues which have been affecting them. Though they have legal representation, there are continuing hurdles and false accusations that set them back.

In Mexico City, we had the honor to visit Casa Alianza and to reconnect with the anthropologist Fernando Orozco.

Our visit to Casa Alianza was bitter sweet. Whereas they have built another center in Mexico City to help and house street kids, they told us that the amount of girls on the streets has risen, and that the young girl who we interviewed in our documentary, Callena, who was struggling with drug addiction, may have since passed away (although this is still to be confirmed by Casa Alianza).

Our visit with Fernando was an unexpected treat. We met up on Friday evening in Mexico City and had sushi together in the lively Zona Rosa! He is working hard with indigenous communities in the state of Guerrero, and on May 16th is organizing a "traditional Nahuatl rain ceremony" with over 120 Nahuatl performers in Mexico City's famed Museum of Anthropology.

All were very supportive of our documentary, and Miguel at CIEPAC even blushed when he saw his photo on our DVD cover and postcard! "Pass me the Map" showed last Tuesday at the Cinema El Puente in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Wednesday at the Foro Cultural Hilvana in Mexico City ... and we look forward to many more showings, as well as the ongoing sharing of information and energies. Photos from our recent travels online soon...

Best wishes,
Monique
